SNĚŽKA (ŚNIEŻKA) IS THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND THE ENTIRE SUDETY MOUNTAINS STANDING AT 1603 M (5259 FT) ABOVE SEA LEVEL ON THE BORDER BETWEEN THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND POLAND.
Sněžka is one of the most popular climbing destinations in Europe, due to its relatively easy ascent without any major technical difficulties. The Czech, Polish and German tourists are prevalent among other hikers in the mountain’s alpine environment.
The first documented ascent of the mountain took place in 1456 when an unidentified Venetian merchant embarked on a trip through the peak in his pursuit for precious stones. The top of the mountain is equipped with a new cable car system, transporting 250 visitors per hour from the town of Pec pod Sněžkou to the top of the mountain.
