CARRAUNTOOHIL (CORRÁN TUATHAIL) IS THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN REPUBLIC OF IRELAND STANDING AT 1038 M (3406 FT) ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THE PEAK IS LOCATED IN THE MACGILLYCUDDY'S REEKS MOUNTAIN RANGE IN COUNT KERRY.
Carrauntoohil is located just an hour and a half from Ireland’s second biggest city Cork. It is surrounded by three valleys with picturesque lakes: Coomcallee valley to the east, Coomloughra to the west and Curragh More to the south. The most popular route to the summit lies on its northeastern slope through relatively challenging terrain, however, due to some slack rocks and higher numbers of climbers, the path has recently become quite unsafe. It doesn’t require any special equipment, but good basic fitness level and moderate caution are highly recommended.
The weather conditions on the top of the mountain may change rapidly, although severe snow and ice conditions are rare. The ascent offers scenic views of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and natural surroundings.
