BEN NEVIS IS THE HIGHEST PEAK IN SCOTLAND AND IN THE BRITISH ISLES. IT STANDS AT 1344 M (4411 FT) ABOVE SEA LEVEL AND IS PART OF THE GRAMPIAN MOUNTAINS IN THE LOCHABER AREA OF THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS.
Ben Nevis is a popular climbing destination, with more than 100 000 visitors every year. The northern cliffs of the mountain are one of the highest in the country reaching 700 m (2300 ft). The place provides endless opportunities for rock and ice climbing of any difficulty.
There are several routes leading to the summit but the most popular and by far the simplest route is the 1883 Pony Track. It starts about 2 km (1.2 mi) from Fort William town center, the closest town to Ben Nevis. The route takes a series of zig-zags that helps avoid steep cliffs. Overall, the ascent is relatively easy, however inexperienced climbers should be careful around uneven rocks, slippery paths and rather arduous descent.
