There’s plenty more than impressive rock faces, forests and wilderness to attract visitors to these mountains. In fact, some would say the real treasure of the region lay underground. The Sierra Nevada was central to the gold rush in the 19th Century, when Americans sought their riches by digging down into the rock. Gold was discovered in the American River (near Placerville) and within two years townships were being constructed to support the 50,000 working gold miners.
Some degree of serenity has returned of course and the likes of Yosemite National Park are central to this area’s renown as a paradise for adventurers. There are countless peaks to climb (including 10 fourteeners), some of the world’s most glamorous and challenging rock climbing routes and huge protected areas of wilderness to hike across for days on end.
