Summer Road Trip 2017 - 5 Unforgettable Experiences in Western Serbia / Montenegro

July 19, 2017

When we designed this summer's road trip I did have a sort of hidden agenda and that was to explore the possibilities of what sometimes gets described as adventure tourism or more precisely in my mind as the scope for enjoying the outdoors. And with this kind of agenda comes a certain pressure to "tick things off". It is not the kind of tourism I like, if truth be told, so we have tried to manage our time to ensure we allow ourselves the possibility to truly discover and not simply to pass through, as if speeding down the hallways of an art gallery.

That said... here are a few amazing adventure experiences that I have not written about, so far and that really deserved a bit more time. I have grouped them together because they are all relatively close.

Redesiging Life Daydreams and Diasporas

Re-designing Life: Daydreams and Diasporas.

July 19, 2017

Almost nobody here lives in Serbia. Sitting close to our table are Australian Serbs, Swedish Serbs, American Serbs, French Serbs and us, I suppose. I guess we fit into this category although I never think of Zorica and Emma (my wife an daughter) in such terms.

There are two aspects of this that intrigue me. The first is an obvious demonstration that only those who have moved abroad and done well are in a position to afford such a place.

Secondly I cannot help but allow my mind to wander and to imagine what kind of lives they have "at home" or do they perhaps still call this land home - the one they abandoned in search of prosperity and security for their family?

Summer Road Trip 2017 - Packrafting Mountain Lakes

July 17, 2017

There is something about a mountain lake that draws you in. It is in a sense the ultimate in doing something simply because it is there. Paddling out into the middle of the lake is often largely pointless, it is not wide enough to pose a physical challenge and it doesn’t take you anywhere, in the way that a river might.

It does however offer a genuinely new viewpoint and I think it is this which is so attractive to me. I have always walked around mountain lakes in awe of their beauty but it is only recently that I have discovered the true joy that is to be found on the water.

Summer Road Trip 2017 - Bobotov Kuk, Durmitor [Video]

July 15, 2017

It was a superb day, which started off cold and misty but was soon bathed in sunshine. The array of flowers in Durmitor National Park is absolutely spectacular and the climb itself gives equally stunning views.

Amazingly a stray dog which was kicking around the car park followed some other people to the very top. Perhaps she has climbed this mountain more than any other living creature!

The view from the summit is uninterrupted as Bobotov Kuk totally d

Summer Road Trip 2017 - Following the Drina

July 13, 2017

In the 1970s a young, hungry and penniless Robert De Niro found himself in this part of the old Yugoslavia. Taken in by the locals, he stayed for some time to recover his strength and was treated with such hospitality and generosity that he would never forget them. Many years later he named a daughter after their mighty river, Drina.

In the last couple of days we have followed the course of this fast-flowing river, immortalised by Ivo Andric (Yugoslavia's Nobel Prize winning writer) in The Bridge on the Drina, and inspirer of Hollywood’s finest. As if the romance of the De Niro story weren’t enough to want to believe it, the landscape and the warmth of the people gives it greater strength.

Summer Road Trip 2017 - Hiking in Vojvodina [Video]

July 11, 2017

After a morning of wine-tasting and car-failing we installed ourselves for the first weekend of our summer road trip, in Salaš Stojšić.  A pleasant Salaš (a traditional type of farm in this area - my favourite being Salas 137), its stencilled walls and intentionally old-fashioned charm is typical of these rural farmhouses. Outside there is a wide spread of gingham-clad tables, fruit trees, a braying donkey and the mandatory charcoal perfume of grilling meat that seems to impregnate the hot, still air on a summer weekend in Vojvodina.

How Will You Adventure in the Summer Holidays? [Video]

July 4, 2017

A bit of an in-betweeny random post today but I am just back from a short climbing trip in the Alps (Trip report here) and we are now days away from our summer holiday adventures beginning.

As I discussed the trip with my daughter over the weekend I also had the chance to reflect on the past month in which it would not be an overstatement to say that she has been "learning" to adventure.

30 Days Wild - H is for Happiness

28, 29 & 30 Days Wild - H is for Happiness

June 30, 2017

30 Days Wild, has primarily been an opportunity for me to share this with my daughter and to introduce her to a few micro-adventures to help her connect with all things wild, even if only in a small measure.

It has been a pleasure, mostly simple, occasionally difficult to find the time to write a blog post, but never boring. Both Emma and I have had great fun doing it. I have been able to share some things I enjoy with my daughter and she has grown more confident from experiences such as making a video, camping out at night, paddling on the river and "playing" with creepy crawlies.

What to do in the mountains when the weather is bad

June 28, 2017

"The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men,
Gang aft agley"

So wrote Robert Burns in his poem To a Mouse; an apology for upturning its nest whilst ploughing a field.

I am in the Alps this week and I feel like the weather in the last few days is Burns' plough and we; the mice. Our plans have certainly gone awry, although no apology has yet been forthcoming. It is often true that time spent in the mountains feels as if it is snatched from the gods that govern the wilderness. We choose our moment ahead of time and then sit tight hoping above all hope that we shall be blessed with the conditions to enjoy nature in all its sunny glory.

27 Days Wild - I is for Ice Cream [VIDEO]

June 27, 2017

Nothing tastes better than an ice cream on a hot sunny day and what better way to cool off in this current heatwave than by making your own "wild" ice cream.

We went out and picked elderflowers to make elderflower, orange and lemon ice cream. The basis of it is elderflower cordial so this is effectively two simple recipes in one.

Enjoy!

26 Days Wild - F is for Flowers

June 26, 2017

A walk across Portholme meadow at this time of year is a special pleasure.

In autumn and winter this 260 acre Site of Special Scientific Interest is shared with livestock. However, they haven't quite grasped the meaning of sharing; the black cattle will gladly stand and face off any human who deigns to approach and it pays to give a wide birth.

Both my wife and I have had encounters. I was chased by a cow, who presumably was still protective of her calf, late in autumn...

25 Days Wild - V is for Verse

June 25, 2017

I am writing Day 25 from Chamonix, in the French Alps. My daughter and I agreed that on this day we would both spend some time reading a wild poem.

Emma's favourite poem; one she likes to recite, is The Grass House by Shirley Hughes.

The grass house
Is my private place,
Nobody can see me
In the grass house...

24 Days Wild - K is for Kite

June 24, 2017

Wind gets a bad rap. It can be very irritating, I'll give you that. It blows things down, it messes your hair, it dries your skin, it blows dust in your eyes, it knocks you down and it picks things up. It is uncontrollable.

But it can be used. And is there anything more fun, liberating and scream out loud enjoyable than flying a kite?

Until last year I had totally forgotten about it. Then I suddenly realised I had a child and I was legitimately allowed to do childish stuff. I bought a cheap kite from Ikea and ran into the meadow, the wind raising it gleefully and swallowing my whoops of joy.

Then, obviously I let my daughter have go too.

Now we frequently take the opportunity to enjoy the pull of the wind and the freedom of the Meadow and it feels really wild!

30 days wild g is for grass

23 Days Wild - G is for Grass

June 23, 2017

Today was the school sports day, so we spent the best part of the day on a large expanse of closely cropped grass; sitting, lying, running, jumping, hopping and dropping eggs off spoons.

It got me thinking of grass and the fact that I haven't cut the lawn since the beginning of June. I didn't set out to do this with any kind of re-wilding exercise, or even to leave it during this "wild" month. It's more down to time constraints and a little laziness, but its amazing how many things grow there, that are not in fact grass - although I am unsure what really constitutes a grass.

Emma and I crawled around taking some pictures to create this green patchwork. Perhaps what is most surprising is, despite the variety of plants, how little they have actually grown during what seems to have been an unusually warm and dry month.

Not that our lawn was ever going to win any prizes, but I kind of like it in this slightly wilder state. Think I might leave it for a bit longer.

22 Days Wild - O is for Owl

June 22, 2017

We were both a little disappointed not to encounter some kind of owl on our camping microadventure on days 16 & 17 of 30 Days Wild and it would be crazy to allow this month to pass without on post about these beautiful birds of prey. On Day 22, and with the finish line in sight, I thought it best for us to pop in to the Raptor Foundation - our local sanctuary to see the owls...

Can you explain what your product does?

June 22, 2017

There is a business adage - or perhaps I should say it's just common sense really - and that is; if you struggle to explain what your product does, you most likely have a problem with it.

If nothing else you are going to have a massive problem selling it and nobody else will be able to explain it. "Ideas that spread, win" as Seth Godin says.

So when it comes to explaining a personal journey of life redesign, which has been an evolutionary thing at best and schizophrenic at times, should I be concerned if it is not clear to everyone?

I was recently invited onto the Join Up Dots podcast - the first time I have been on a podcast - and a good chance (I thought) to hone my message. Prior to this, the only person with whom I discuss in detail my decision to quit the rat race in search of a more entrepreneurial and adventurous lifestyle, is my wife. And she kind of knows me. She sees my mood swings, knows what makes me tick and interprets little hints. I am not saying clarity is not required in a marriage, but there is some leeway, because effectively things have been explained not just by words but also by actions.

This week, I have also been asked to succinctly write a few words for distribution to media describing what I am doing and what my plan is. Hmm. Anyone who read my post about Life Redesign from a couple of weeks ago will know that this has been changing and I have had trouble in the past describing what it is that I am doing. So much so, indeed, that by the time I had put the same post out on Medium it had altered a little and become more succinct.

The podcast experience sadly didn't give me the chance to talk around the areas I wanted or the chance to fully explain my journey. I would have liked to perhaps explain chronologically how I reached where I am and also what motivated me to make the changes. But you live, and most important of all, you learn!

What I didn't realise until this past couple of weeks is that in order to talk about myself in this way I need to consider myself as a product and it can't be one that changes every few days. So I have settled on a high level view and here it is.

"In late 2016 I quit the "rat race". It was long time coming and it was a difficult decision. When I decided to take this dramatic decision I had in mind the idea to “redesign my life” in a way that was more entrepreneurial, satisfying, interesting and adventurous both in my personal and professional life.
I wanted to work on different projects, to learn new skills and to live a more adventurous and fulfilling life, especially spending more time outdoors. In short I wanted to follow my passions, be happier and live better.
I decided 2017 would be the year of change."

And this is the short of it. I have sent this to the media outlets that requested it and I will stick to it.

21 Days Wild - D is for Damsels & Dragons

June 21, 2017

I was always under the impression that damsels are the skinny ones and dragonflies the heavier set flying machines. I don't know where I picked this information up - probably from my parents - but I passed it onto my daughter.

Anyway, after she asked me I thought it wise to check up and discovered that I was (kind of) right. But up until recently I didn't know my chasers from my hawkers...

New Gear for review

New Gear for Review

June 21, 2017

Its just a few day before I go off to the Alps for the best part of a week, reacquainting myself with the glaciers and ridges of the mountains that inspired my love of the outdoors.

It is surprising how long-lasting a lot of outdoor gear can be, even when left unattended. So I have scraped a bit of rust off my crampons and we are good to go!

Actually I have taken delivery of quite a few new bits this week, as I prepare of our adventure road trip in Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro. Below are a few which I shall be reviewing over the summer.

IMG_2855.JPG
IMG_2854.JPG
IMG_2853.JPG

I am not used to requiring waterproof covers for everything but if I have learnt anything since buying the packraft it is the value in keeping everything in one dry bag and the phone well and truly safe. I have a 20l dry bag and two phone covers to try out in some white water in July!

The last time I filtered water was using tablets which was difficult to stomach, but things have moved on since then and Water-to-Go seems to provide a reasonably-priced option for water-filtration. I think that will get a lot of testing over the month of July.

My GoPro is never far from me and since my last mini grip tripod broke in two places whilst I was in the Cairngorms in April I have been looking out for a new one at a reasonable price. The Fantaseal® Robust Octopus seems to fit the bill, we shall see how it performs.

I have never used a solar charger but with the profusion of devices that my family seems to have amassed I felt it made sense not just for myself in the mountains but also for all of us on the road. I will also be blogging on our trip so would hate to be without power! I have the Anker PowerPort Solar Lite (15W 2-Port USB Solar Charger) which should give plenty of power!

I will start posting reviews in early August for these items and some clothing... now back to #30DaysWild.

20 Days Wild - U is for Urban

June 20, 2017

Take your eye off any patch of your carefully tended garden and the lawn grows long, dandelions surge out of the ground and some kind of knotweed or ivy is chasing its way through the undergrowth, throttling your darling little plants.

As lovely as ivy can be I have a personal grudge. It goes way back to a flat I bought in Innsbruck, Austria. Ivy cascaded romantically down the balcony and over one side of the building, perched there overlooking the snowy Alps...

19 Days Wild - J is of Juvenile

June 19, 2017

Long-tailed tits were the first I noticed nesting, but the magpies soon put paid to their attempts at raising a family. The blackbirds were successful and starlings too in neighbouring trees. Robins made a home at the third attempt in our carport and now we have a wood pigeon sitting on two eggs, in the vine, just above the back door... but what do you do with an abandoned juvenile?
